On the evening of Friday, February 16, 2024, in Sunnyside, Washington, a burst of gunfire shattered the night and ended the lives of two young brothers. 13-year-old Hispanic male, Isaak Hernandez, and his 17-year-old brother, Maurice Hernandez, were fatally shot while they waited in a vehicle. The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. in the 1500 block of East Edison Avenue.
The two brothers had accompanied their mother to a store in the area and were waiting for her in the car when the shooting took place.
An autopsy later confirmed that both Isaak and Maurice died from multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators believe that more than one shooter was involved in the tragic event that cut short the lives of the two teenagers. While the motive for the shooting has not been publicly confirmed, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of it being related to drugs or gangs, which have been issues in the area.
In the days following the double homicide, the Sunnyside Police Department made an arrest in connection with the case. A 13-year-old male was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder and accomplice to first-degree murder. However, the teen was later released from custody. The prosecutor's office declined to file charges at that time, stating a need for more information before proceeding with the case. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to seek tips from the public to bring those responsible for the deaths of Isaak and Maurice Hernandez to justice.
