In a neighborhood in Renton, Washington, near Highlands Elementary School, the life of 15-year-old Jaime Villeda was cut short on the afternoon of April 13, 2024. The male teenager was with a friend when a single gunshot echoed, leaving him with a fatal wound to his torso. Though he was rushed to the hospital, his injuries proved too severe, and he succumbed to them. The King County Medical Examiner's Office later ruled his death a homicide.
Those who knew Jaime remembered him as a joyful and loving young man, a good kid with an amazing soul who was always there for his family and friends, especially his sister.
Following the shooting, a frantic 911 call was made by the person with Jaime, a 16-year-old boy who claimed he had accidentally shot his friend. He remained at the scene until first responders arrived. Surveillance footage from a nearby residence seemed to support his account, capturing the sound of a gunshot followed by cries of distress. The investigation that followed, however, revealed a more complicated and troubling history between the two teenagers. The 16-year-old suspect was not only in violation of a no-contact order with Villeda but was also on electronic home monitoring at the time of the shooting for a previous drive-by shooting that had occurred in November 2023. It is believed that Jaime Villeda was one of the individuals the suspect had targeted in that earlier incident.
The 16-year-old was arrested and has been charged with second-degree manslaughter and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. During his initial court appearance, a judge set his bail at $1 million. The judge noted that if the conditions of the suspect's electronic home monitoring, which included no contact with Villeda and a prohibition on possessing firearms, had been followed, the tragic event could have been avoided. The death of Jaime Villeda has since highlighted growing concerns within the Renton community about the rise of youth involvement in violent crime.
