In the community of Spanaway, Washington, a confrontation with law enforcement on July 15, 2024, ended in the death of 38-year-old Dante Cudini, a White / Caucasian male. The events leading to the fatal encounter began when Pierce County deputies attempted to make contact with Cudini, who was considered a criminal suspect, near Mountain Highway East.
Deputies reportedly attempted to use spike strips to stop Cudini's vehicle, but he drove away.
During the ensuing events, Cudini's vehicle allegedly struck a deputy, causing minor injuries to the officer. A pursuit followed, heading east on 260th Street and coming to a stop near 70th Avenue East in the Elk Plain area. At this point, Cudini is said to have exited his vehicle and ran into a nearby house.
Shortly after he entered the residence, deputies reported that shots were fired at 2:57 p.m. Medical aid was administered to Cudini at the scene, but he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. The Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed the cause of death and ruled the manner of death as a homicide.
No other suspects were reported to be involved in the incident. The deputies who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such cases. The Pierce County Force Investigation Team is conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting. Authorities have noted that Cudini had a criminal history but have not specified the crime he was suspected of at the time of the initial contact attempt.
