Darryl Eugene Stamper Jr., a 41-year-old resident of Springfield, Ohio, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident on January 1, 2023. The incident occurred in the early morning hours at 118 South Race Street in Springfield. Springfield Police Division officers responded to reports of a shooting and found Stamper with life-threatening injuries. He was subsequently transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his wounds.
Two suspects were apprehended in connection with Stamper's death. Lawaun D. Bass, 33, and Nefertari A. Alexander, 32, both from Columbus, Ohio, were arrested and charged with improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation and tampering with evidence. The Clark County Sheriff's Office assisted the Springfield Police Division in apprehending the suspects. A sheriff's deputy located their car and took both individuals into custody after initiating a traffic stop.
The incident that led to Stamper's death was reportedly connected to a traffic accident earlier that night involving Bass's sister, which brought Bass to Springfield. On January 10, 2023, both Bass and Alexander were indicted in Clark County Common Pleas Court on murder charges related to the fatal shooting.
In a related incident, on January 2, 2023, another shooting occurred at the same address, 118 South Race Street. Two victims, a 17-year-old juvenile and a 65-year-old woman, suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. The suspect in this case, 40-year-old Lee Mays, was arrested and charged with two counts of felonious assault and one count of having weapons under disabilities.
The Springfield Police Division confirmed that both shootings at 118 South Race Street were related and not random acts. All suspects involved in these two incidents were taken into custody, and the investigations remained active and ongoing.
On August 18, 2023, it was reported that Lawaun Bass was convicted and sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for the deadly New Year's Day shooting of Darryl Stamper. This conviction brought some closure to the tragic events that unfolded at the beginning of 2023 in Springfield, Ohio.
