On the night of his death, Springfield police responded to reports of a shooting around 9:05 PM at the intersection of Kenton and Burt streets. Upon arrival, they discovered Gill inside his SUV suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident. In connection with Gill's death, Daniel Taylor Jr., a 21-year-old man, was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including murder and felonious assault. Initially indicted in May 2023, Taylor faced charges that included improper handling of a firearm and unlawful possession of dangerous ordnance. As the investigation progressed, it was revealed that Taylor had been incarcerated for a parole violation at the time of his arrest for Gill's murder.
