On January 13, 2023, Anthony George Boothe, a 48-year-old resident of Cleveland, Ohio, was fatally shot in a tragic incident that left four others dead and an 8-year-old girl critically injured. The shootings occurred at a home on Mack Court in Cleveland around 7 PM. Boothe was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The assailant, identified as Martin Muniz, 42, is reported to have shot five people in total, including family members.
Among the deceased were Boothe's wife, Angelic Gonzalez, age 34; his nephew, Jayden Baez, age 16; and his uncle, Miguel Gonzalez, age 70. Following the shootings, Muniz approached police officers and confessed to the crime, leading to his immediate arrest.
Muniz was charged with multiple counts of aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder. Initially facing three counts of homicide and two counts of felony assault due to the injuries sustained by the surviving 8-year-old girl, the charges against him escalated following Boothe's death. Ultimately, he pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated murder and one count of attempted aggravated murder. In August 2024, he was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murders and an additional prison term for the assault on the child.
This incident has been described as one of Cleveland's most horrific acts of violence in recent memory. Local officials expressed their condolences and emphasized the devastating impact of gun violence on families and communities. Muniz is also suspected in a separate homicide case in New Jersey, although details regarding that matter have not been disclosed.
