Anthony Ortiz, a 25-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically died on December 29, 2016, in Cleveland, OH. The circumstances surrounding his death were part of a larger incident that occurred at My Friends Restaurant in Cleveland's Edgewater neighborhood on March 22, 2021.
The incident began as a verbal altercation between Ortiz and 27-year-old Keondre Austin inside the 24/7 restaurant just before 4 a.m.
The argument escalated when Ortiz and another individual, 29-year-old Anthony Hunt, pulled out guns and began shooting at each other. This resulted in multiple gunshot wounds for Ortiz, Hunt, and the two victims, Austin and 23-year-old Geongela Rivers.
Ortiz discarded his gun and fled the scene in a vehicle, while Hunt remained at the restaurant. Both were later arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, Austin and Rivers succumbed to their injuries, while Ortiz and Hunt were charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated murder and felonious assault.
The investigation by the Cleveland Police Department’s Homicide Unit linked Ortiz and Hunt to the crime, leading to their indictment by a Cuyahoga County grand jury. Both men were held at the Cuyahoga County Jail, with Hunt on a $2 million bond and Ortiz on a $1 million bond.
