Rudy Tirado Gonzalez was a well-known and beloved businessman in Columbus, Ohio. The 51-year-old White man was a talented chef and the owner of Rudy’s Food Drink and Sports on West Fifth Avenue. Over the years, he had also owned apartment houses, construction businesses, and pawn shops. A friend, Kara Snyder, described him as a kind and generous person who “would’ve given the shirt off his back.”
She said friends and family were in a state of “disbelief, shock, and sadness” after his death, adding, “I can’t imagine anyone wanting to hurt Rudy.”
On the night of January 23, 2023, Gonzalez was at the Crazee Mule Pub and Grill on Cleveland Avenue. Shortly after 11 p.m., he became involved in an argument with another man inside the bar. According to his friend, Gonzalez was trying to help someone and was reportedly “sticking up for a girl, who was being harassed.” Security cameras inside the pub captured the dispute as it unfolded.
During the argument, the other man pulled out a gun and shot Gonzalez several times. When Columbus police officers arrived at the scene, they found Gonzalez suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Detectives questioned witnesses and reviewed the security footage, which led them to identify 25-year-old Armando Flores as the suspect. Police issued an arrest warrant charging Flores with murder. On February 3, 2023, authorities located and arrested Flores in connection with the fatal shooting.
Following his arrest, Armando Flores was indicted for his role in the death of Rudy Tirado Gonzalez. The case was resolved when Flores pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntary manslaughter. He was subsequently sentenced to prison, bringing the legal proceedings to a close.
