On March 11, 2023, a house fire occurred in the 5300 block of Gardendale Avenue in Trotwood, Ohio. Firefighters responding to the scene discovered the body of 26-year-old Jaykwan D. Hardy inside the residence. Multiple dogs were also found in the home and were safely rescued. Subsequent investigations revealed that Hardy had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, leading authorities to classify the incident as a homicide.
The investigation identified four suspects involved in the crime.
On May 11, 2023, during a traffic stop on Salem Avenue, 30-year-old Savon Anthony Davis of Clayton was arrested. He was charged with causing Hardy's death and initiating the fire to conceal the crime. In April 2024, Davis pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and aggravated burglary. As part of a plea agreement, other charges, including murder and aggravated arson, were dismissed. He is scheduled for sentencing on May 29, 2024, and faces a prison term of 18 to 20 years.
The investigation continued, and on August 30, 2024, three additional individuals were indicted in connection with Hardy's death:
- **James Norman, 23, of Dayton**: Indicted on charges including murder, aggravated burglary, felonious assault, aggravated arson, and grand theft (motor vehicle).
- **Icesse Princess Messiah, 29, of Dayton**: Indicted on charges including murder, aggravated burglary, felonious assault, aggravated arson, and grand theft (motor vehicle).
- **Bryhana Renee Murphy, 26, of Harrison Township**: Indicted on charges including murder, aggravated burglary, and felonious assault.
Norman was already incarcerated on unrelated charges at the time of the indictment. Murphy surrendered to authorities on September 3, 2024, and Messiah was apprehended on September 4, 2024, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service's Southern Ohio Fugitive Strike Team and the Springfield Police Division. All three are currently in custody awaiting arraignment.
Authorities believe the motive behind Hardy's death was a scheme to steal items from his home. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement and the community were instrumental in bringing the suspects to justice, providing some measure of closure to Hardy's family.
