Anthony Norman, a 40-year-old man from Cleveland, Ohio, tragically lost his life on April 7, 2023. On that fateful day, Norman was found with multiple gunshot wounds lying in a driveway in the 4900 block of Anson Avenue near East 49th Street in Cleveland. Emergency services responded to the scene, but unfortunately, Norman was pronounced deceased upon their arrival.
The investigation into Norman's death revealed that he had been ambushed outside a residence by two individuals: Malik Blackwell, 23, and Christopher Thompson, 28. The assailants shot Norman multiple times before fleeing the scene, leaving him lying next to a vehicle. Witnesses reported seeing a white SUV traveling in the area at the time of the incident, which may have been connected to the crime.
Law enforcement agencies quickly began their pursuit of the suspects. On May 4, 2023, the U.S. Marshals Service announced the arrest of Malik Blackwell, who was wanted in connection with two separate homicides, including the murder of Anthony Norman. Further investigation uncovered that Blackwell was not only responsible for Norman's death but also for the murder of 61-year-old Timothy Nash, which had occurred just three months earlier on January 23, 2023.
The case against Malik Blackwell proceeded to trial, and on June 14, 2024, he was found guilty by a jury on multiple charges, including two counts of Aggravated Murder, four counts of Murder, and four counts of Felonious Assault. In a separate bench trial, Blackwell was also found guilty of two counts of Having Weapons While Under Disability. The court sentenced Blackwell to life in prison with the first eligibility of parole after 68 years, effectively ensuring he would not be eligible for release until the age of 91.
Christopher Thompson, the second suspect in Norman's murder, pleaded guilty to one count of Involuntary Manslaughter on June 4, 2024. He received a sentence of six years in prison for his role in the crime.
In a tragic twist, it was revealed during the legal proceedings that Anthony Norman was actually Malik Blackwell's cousin, adding an additional layer of complexity and sorrow to the case. The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor, Michael C. O'Malley, emphasized the violent nature of Blackwell's actions and expressed relief that he would be off the streets, stating that the community would be much safer as a result.
