On April 15, 2023, 15-year-old Amya Marie Monserrat was fatally shot during a birthday party at Martha’s Boulevard Bar and Grille on Southern Boulevard in Youngstown, Ohio. A dispute between two groups escalated into gunfire, and Amya, a freshman and head cheerleader at Valley Christian High School, was struck by a stray bullet. She was transported to Mercy Health, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, authorities arrested two individuals in connection with Amya's death. A 16-year-old male suspect was taken into custody and held at the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center. Additionally, 20-year-old Saun M. Peterson was arrested on charges including complicity to murder. In November 2023, Peterson pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and other related charges. Prosecutors recommended a prison sentence of 10 to 12½ years.
Amya was born on December 21, 2007, in Youngstown to Jaismin Morris and Jose’ Monserrat. She was employed by her mother's business, Bounce Bounce Palace, and enjoyed doing hair, dancing, and spending time with her siblings. Her untimely death deeply affected the community, prompting calls to end violence and remember her vibrant spirit.
The investigation into Amya's death remains ongoing, with authorities seeking further information to bring all responsible parties to justice. The community continues to mourn her loss and honors her memory through various tributes and gatherings.
