On April 19, 2023, 22-year-old Jaevierre Pete Lamont Greer, a DoorDash delivery driver from Akron, Ohio, was fatally shot while making a delivery. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Timberland Village Apartments on Timber Trail. Greer was ambushed by two assailants who had reportedly followed him to the delivery location after a prior altercation.
He was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
Authorities arrested two suspects in connection with Greer's death: 21-year-old Matthew Couch and 19-year-old Derek Ransome-Fromby, both from Akron. They were initially charged with felonious assault, with additional charges, including murder, pending. Investigations revealed that Greer had been involved in a verbal altercation with the suspects earlier that evening in the Highland Square area. The suspects allegedly followed Greer to his delivery location, where the fatal shooting occurred.
In July 2024, Matthew Couch pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of conspiracy to murder, agreeing to testify against co-defendant Ransome-Fromby. In exchange, charges of murder and felonious assault against Couch were dismissed. Ransome-Fromby faced charges of felonious assault, murder, and felony murder. His trial was scheduled for November 1, 2024, with Couch's sentencing set for November 19, 2024.
Tragically, this was not the first time Greer had been targeted. In July 2022, he survived another shooting incident in Akron, where he was ambushed and sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He spent over a month in the hospital recovering from that attack. Authorities have investigated potential connections between the two incidents but have not established any links.
Greer's family remembers him as a beloved son and brother who enjoyed making jokes and spending time with his loved ones. His untimely death has left them seeking justice and answers to the senseless violence that claimed his life.
