On July 8, 2023, 27-year-old Jonathan Lanum was fatally shot near a residence on the 13800 block of Earlwood Road in Cleveland, Ohio. The incident occurred following a verbal altercation between Lanum and another individual, which escalated when the suspect retrieved a firearm and shot Lanum multiple times. Lanum was transported to University Hospitals, where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Alphonso Jones, fled the scene following the shooting.
A warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of aggravated murder. On September 11, 2023, members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force apprehended Jones at an apartment near the 26100 block of Lakeshore Boulevard in Euclid, Ohio. This arrest marked the 13th homicide suspect captured under "Operation 2-1-6," an initiative aimed at removing violent fugitives from Cleveland's streets.
Lanum's death was part of a violent weekend in Cleveland, during which multiple shootings occurred. The arrest of Jones brought some measure of closure to Lanum's family and underscored the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to address violent crime in the area.
