He was shot and killed in the early morning hours shortly after leaving his girlfriend's apartment with Ramal Hammond, who was later identified as the suspect. Jamal's girlfriend testified that after hearing the gunshot, she saw Jamal trying to run toward her house before collapsing and repeatedly saying "Ramal, Ramal".
Ramal Hammond was indicted on multiple counts related to Jamal's murder. The crime scene reflected that Jamal had traveled several hundred feet before collapsing. The court's decision was affirmed on appeal, and Ramal was sentenced accordingly.
