On July 31, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in Columbus, Ohio, resulting in the deaths of 30-year-old Demarco Moorer and 33-year-old Ciera Webster. The shooting took place in the 3200 block of Plum Creek Drive at an apartment complex just before midnight.
Officers responded to the scene after reports of gunfire. Paramedics pronounced Webster dead in the parking lot at 12:08 a.m. Moorer was taken to a hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries at 2:13 a.m.
on August 1, 2023.
The Columbus Police Department quickly identified and arrested a suspect in connection with the double homicide. Marquise Sheppard, a 29-year-old man, was apprehended and charged with two counts of murder. Investigators stated that "an argument took place between the victims and suspect" prior to the shooting.
Law enforcement made a traffic stop in the area of I-670 and State Route 315 after spotting a vehicle matching the description of one seen leaving the scene of the shooting. This led to Sheppard's arrest.
It was later revealed that Sheppard had been released from prison in June 2023, less than two months before the fatal shooting. The case highlighted concerns about recidivism and public safety, with local residents expressing unease about the prevalence of gun violence in the area.
The victims, Demarco Moorer and Ciera Webster, were identified as a married couple. Moorer, born on March 18, 1993, in Columbus, Ohio, was remembered in his obituary as a beloved individual who received his wings too soon.
In November 2024, Marquise Sheppard was sentenced for the murders of Moorer and Webster-Moorer, bringing some closure to the case that had shocked the Columbus community.
