Shermaine Deqaun Upshaw, a 44-year-old Black man originally from Lima, Ohio, was a father who loved his son Emari. Known to enjoy traveling, sports, and spending time with his friends, he was also preceded in death by another son, Shamere. His family and a host of relatives remembered him at services in his hometown of Lima following his death.
On the afternoon of Monday, August 21, 2023, Columbus Police Department officers responded to a report of a man down in northeast Columbus.
They arrived just after 3:30 p.m. in the 2900 block of Sandridge Avenue, where they discovered Shermaine Upshaw on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. Clinton Township paramedics were called to the scene, but Upshaw was unresponsive and was pronounced dead.
The Columbus Police Homicide Unit immediately opened an investigation into the fatal shooting. Detectives began looking into the circumstances that led to Upshaw’s death, but authorities have not publicly released any information regarding a potential motive or person of interest in the case.
As of August 2023, the homicide of Shermaine Upshaw remains unsolved. No arrests have been made, and investigators are asking for the public’s help.
