Jahajee Lonell Cobb Sr., a 25-year-old Black man from Mansfield, Ohio, was a father of three whose life was cut short in the summer of 2023. Family and friends gathered to honor his memory at his funeral service on September 8, 2023.
In the early hours of August 27, 2023, a baby shower at a residence on Blymyer Avenue devolved into chaos. According to police, an altercation broke out at the large gathering, and it appeared that some people left and then returned with guns.
Around 2:30 a.m., multiple shots were fired. Responding officers found Jahajee Cobb in the driveway behind the home, where he was pronounced dead. Three other people at the party were also struck by gunfire but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Mansfield Division of Police Major Crimes Unit launched an investigation and quickly identified two suspects. The day after the shooting, Michael Lee Coffee Jr., 30, turned himself in to authorities. His alleged accomplice, 22-year-old Avanta Adams, was arrested at his workplace that same afternoon.
Both Adams and Coffee were charged with murder, and a magistrate set bail for each at $1 million. During the investigation, police determined that two different calibers of firearms had been used in the attack. The shot that killed Jahajee Cobb was fired from a 9mm handgun.
The case reached a significant development in May 2024 when Avanta Adams admitted in a Richland County courtroom to fatally shooting Jahajee Cobb. A judge acknowledged the prosecution’s statement that Adams was the one who possessed the 9mm weapon that night. As of that month, Adams’s sentencing was scheduled for May 23, 2024.
