Luis Angel Diaz was a three-year-old Hispanic boy who brought laughter and happiness to his family. His parents, Luis Andres Diaz and Angelica M. Figueroa, cherished their son, who was an adored older brother to his baby sibling, Ezequiel. A bright and energetic child, Luis loved chips, sizzling bacon, Hot Wheels, and watching the cartoon "Octonauts."
On the afternoon of September 28, 2023, Luis was fatally shot while secured in his car seat in his mother’s car in Cleveland, Ohio.
The shooting happened around 2:20 p.m. near West 66th Street and Denison Avenue. Luis, his mother, and his 11-month-old sibling were in the vehicle when gunfire erupted. Luis was struck in the back, and a 31-year-old man standing outside the car was also hit. Both were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where Luis was pronounced dead. The man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators determined the shooting stemmed from a neighborhood dispute. A woman named Katherine Treadway, angry with a neighbor, called on others to retaliate. Her boyfriend, Juan Davis, arrived and acted as the getaway driver for Devonte Parker and Jayden Sorensen. Parker and Sorensen, armed with guns including a rifle, opened fire on the Diaz family's car. Police quickly identified and arrested Treadway, Davis, Parker, and Sorensen in connection with the senseless attack.
The case concluded in early 2025. Two of the defendants, Katherine Treadway and Jayden Sorensen, pleaded guilty to charges related to their involvement. The other two, Juan Davis and Devonte Parker, were convicted at trial by a Cuyahoga County jury.
Following the convictions, all four defendants were sentenced to prison. Juan Davis received a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 49 years. Devonte Parker, Katherine Treadway, and Jayden Sorensen also received prison terms for their roles in the shooting. The case was fully adjudicated as of February 2025.
