On January 9, 2024, Gilbert Contera-Ramirez, a 38-year-old resident of Columbus, Ohio, was fatally shot at the Island Club Apartments. Police responded to a report of gunfire around 10:15 a.m. and discovered Contera-Ramirez inside an apartment suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate arrival of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:57 a.m. Evidence collected included two shell casings found near his body, indicating the violent nature of the incident.
Following the shooting, witnesses reported seeing two men fleeing the scene with firearms. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage that captured these individuals running from the apartment and entering a red Honda Accord parked nearby. This vehicle was traced back to a residence in the Hilltop neighborhood, leading police to execute a search warrant at that location. During this operation, they arrested an 18-year-old named Manuel Perez-Cajete, who was present at the home and reportedly admitted to being involved in the confrontation that led to Contera-Ramirez's death.
Manuel Perez-Cajete has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting. Court records indicate that he confessed to driving to Contera-Ramirez's apartment to confront him regarding an undisclosed issue. After the shooting, Perez-Cajete fled the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter when officers found him at his home along with a firearm linked to the incident. He is currently held in the Franklin County jail with a bond set at $2 million. Authorities have not yet publicly identified any additional suspects involved in this tragic event.
