On January 12, 2024, a tragic incident occurred outside the Greater Dayton Recreation Center in Dayton, Ohio, resulting in the death of 20-year-old Isaiah Murray. The shooting took place around 12:25 p.m., prompting a lockdown of both the recreation center and the nearby Roosevelt Elementary School as authorities searched for the suspects.
Isaiah Murray was pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger.
The shooting occurred on the outdoor basketball court near the recreation center, located at 2100 W. Third St. Multiple gunshots were reportedly fired during the incident, with one bullet striking a window of the recreation center.
Two teenagers have been charged in connection with Murray's death. Kyree G. Whitaker, 19, and William Lamont Brown Jr., 19, from Clayton, were both implicated in the shooting. Whitaker has pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter and three counts of aggravated robbery, all with firearm specifications. As part of a plea agreement, Whitaker has agreed to a 15-year prison sentence and will pay restitution of $1,400 plus any documented funeral costs for the victim.
According to court documents, Whitaker allegedly brandished a firearm during a robbery involving three men. An affidavit filed in the Dayton Municipal Court stated that Whitaker conspired with several others to set up and execute the robbery, which resulted in Murray's death.
William Lamont Brown Jr. faces charges of murder and complicity in relation to the incident. Both suspects were 19 years old at the time of their arrests.
The case has been described as an attempted robbery gone wrong, with Murray being shot and killed as a direct consequence of the planned crime. The investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing, with Whitaker's sentencing scheduled for January 6, 2025.
