On August 10, 2024, at approximately 11:25 p.m., Akron police responded to reports of a shooting in the 1800 block of Coventry Street in the Firestone Park neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers found 20-year-old Elijah Demarion Jones lying in front of a residence with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was transported to Summa Health Akron City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigations revealed that an altercation had occurred between Jones and 26-year-old Stacy Martin shortly before the shooting. Martin was taken into custody shortly after the incident and initially charged with murder, tampering with evidence, having weapons under disability, and obstructing justice.
In September 2024, a Summit County grand jury indicted Martin on charges including voluntary manslaughter with a three-year firearm specification, having weapons while under disability, tampering with evidence, obstructing justice, and trafficking in marijuana. He pleaded not guilty to all counts during his arraignment on October 7, 2024, and his bond was set at $250,000.
Elijah Jones, born on March 9, 2004, in Akron, Ohio, was the third eldest of his siblings. He attended Towpath Trail High School and later pursued a career in construction, building and renovating homes in affluent areas. Known for his playful spirit and generosity, Elijah enjoyed music, video games, basketball, and cherished time with his family. He was a member of Living for Christ Ministries Inc.
The tragic loss of Elijah Jones has deeply affected his family and the Akron community.
