On August 22, 2024, at approximately 9 p.m., Beavercreek police responded to a residence in the 1800 block of Maple Lane, where they discovered 55-year-old Michael Corrigan deceased from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Family members, concerned after failing to reach him, found his body and alerted authorities.
Investigators identified 52-year-old Janel M. Nelson of Thorp, Wisconsin, as a suspect. Nelson and Corrigan had maintained an on-and-off relationship for 15 years. A social media post from Nelson's estranged daughter, noting an unexpected visit from her mother, helped authorities locate Nelson in Omaha, Nebraska. License plate readers further confirmed her movements. Omaha police arrested Nelson on August 27, 2024, and discovered a .380 caliber handgun in her vehicle, believed to be the murder weapon.
Nelson was extradited to Ohio and charged with murder and felonious assault. During her arraignment in Greene County Common Pleas Court, Judge Adolfo Tornichio set her bail at $1 million. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is processing evidence, and Beavercreek detectives continue to investigate the case.
