On February 26, 2024, a family dispute in a Northeast Heights home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, culminated in the tragic death of 35-year-old Travis Sheckler, a Caucasian male. The events of that afternoon unfolded at the residence on Vivian Dr. N.E., where an argument between Travis and his younger brother, Nathan Sheckler, escalated into a physical fight.
Their mother, who was present at the home, witnessed Travis grab his 28-year-old brother by the neck and punch him.
Following the physical altercation, the conflict seemed to momentarily cease. Nathan then told Travis to leave his bedroom. As Travis walked out of the room, Nathan followed him, now holding a rifle. The mother reported hearing Nathan tell his brother to "Leave me alone" before he raised the firearm and fired a single shot, striking Travis as he was turning away. Travis, who was unarmed, stumbled into the laundry room and collapsed.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Nathan ran to his brother's side, asking if he was okay before instructing their mother to call 911. However, Nathan then fled the scene in a gold Buick sedan. He later sent a text message to his mother, expressing remorse for what had happened.
The brothers had a history of conflict, with their mother telling homicide detectives that Travis had a history of mental illness and used drugs to self-medicate. She also stated that Travis had expressed anger towards Nathan in the past. Just two days prior to the fatal shooting, police had responded to another incident at the home where Travis was identified as the aggressor.
Homicide detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Nathan Sheckler. He was located and taken into custody overnight at the Siegel Suites motel on University Blvd. N.E. Nathan Sheckler was subsequently booked into the Metro Detention Center on an open count of murder. In September 2025, he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to five years of supervised probation.
