On the evening of April 1, 2024, Shiereen Al-Jibury, a 39-year-old mother of three from Mesilla, New Mexico, was fatally shot in a tragic incident that unfolded near University Avenue and Stanford Street. According to witnesses and law enforcement reports, Al-Jibury was seen exiting a gray SUV barefoot when gunfire erupted. She reportedly ran toward another vehicle, signaling for help and shouting that she had been shot.
Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots as the suspect, later identified as her husband, Oscar Renee Sandoval, pursued her. Despite the efforts of first responders, Al-Jibury succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Investigators revealed that Sandoval, 59, allegedly shot Al-Jibury once in the chest while she was in the SUV and then fired four additional shots as she attempted to escape. The couple's son later disclosed that Sandoval had signed over property deeds to him just days before the shooting without explanation. Following the crime, Sandoval fled the scene in the SUV, which was later located abandoned in Sunland Park with key evidence inside, including his wallet and Al-Jibury's cellphone. Surveillance footage showed Sandoval walking away from the area wearing a dark hoodie and shorts.
Sandoval was initially at large and considered armed and dangerous. A multi-agency manhunt ensued, involving local and federal law enforcement agencies. On April 9, 2024, Mexican authorities apprehended Sandoval in Ciudad Juárez following leads developed by U.S. Marshals and other agencies. He was deported to the United States the next day and taken into custody at the Santa Teresa Port of Entry. Sandoval now faces charges of first-degree murder and is being held without bond pending trial.
