James Luis Lara-Salazar, an 18-year-old resident of Hobbs, New Mexico, tragically lost his life on May 30, 2024, following a shooting incident that occurred on May 25, 2024. The young man was found suffering from several gunshot wounds on the 2000 block of North Kingsley Street in Hobbs.
After the shooting, James was transported to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, where he was initially in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on May 30, 2024.
James was known for his distinctive curly brown hair, smart-alec smirk, and wonderful sense of humor. He was loved by many and left behind a young son named Santiago Lara-Salazar.
In connection with this tragic event, law enforcement acted swiftly. The Hobbs Police Department arrested 19-year-old Eddie Martinez on Saturday, May 25, 2024, the same day as the shooting. Initially, Martinez was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. However, following James Lara-Salazar's death, the charge against Eddie Martinez was upgraded to murder.
James Luis Lara-Salazar was born on September 12, 2005, in Hobbs, NM, to Vanessa Lara. He is survived by his son, parents, siblings, grandparents, and numerous other family members. In a touching tribute to his character, it was noted that James became an organ donor, saving lives even after his passing.
The community mourned the loss of this young life, with his family remembering him fondly and stating that if James were still with them, he would encourage everyone not to be sad or grieve, but instead to 'LOVE YOU, BE SAFE!'.
