On June 25, 2024, 17-year-old Elijah Hadley, a member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe from Bent, New Mexico, was fatally shot by an Otero County Sheriff's deputy during a welfare check. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on U.S. Highway 70 near mile marker 240, between Tularosa and Mescalero.

According to reports, Deputy Jacob Diaz-Austin responded to a call about a male walking in the median of the highway. Upon encountering Hadley, the deputy ordered him to show his hands. Dashboard cam ...
