Mark Deandre Grant III, a 29-year-old Black man, was living in a drainage tunnel in Las Vegas, Nevada, with his girlfriend, Jecenia Grant. She described him as an “amazing person,” a “terrific friend, a great boyfriend,” and the man she wanted to spend her life with. The couple had made a home for themselves in the tunnel system near Arville Street and Harmon Avenue, where they had been living for about seven and a half months.
In the early morning of February 20, 2023, tragedy
struck. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department received a call about an unresponsive man at approximately 2:40 a.m. Officers arrived to find Mark Grant beside the drainage canal. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. Investigators determined that he had been shot inside the tunnel where he lived. After being wounded, he managed to exit the canal but collapsed nearby.
The investigation into Mark’s death continued for two months. In April 2023, police identified a suspect who was already in custody at the Clark County Detention Center on unrelated charges. On April 20, authorities arrested 34-year-old Jemiah Garner in connection with the homicide.
Jemiah Garner was scheduled for an arraignment on the new charges in late April 2023. According to court records, he was also facing a separate felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon. As of April 2023, the case was proceeding through the court system.
