On April 27, 2023, Isaiah Lee, a 28-year-old Black/African American male, was fatally wounded in a shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The incident occurred in the afternoon as Lee sat in a parked vehicle. He was struck in the head by gunfire and transported to a local hospital in a private vehicle, but he succumbed to his injuries days later on April 30, 2023.
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing approximately a dozen gunshots fired in rapid succession, seemingly from a fully
automatic weapon. Surveillance footage from the area captured a gray Dodge Charger speeding away from the location immediately following the sound of gunfire. An individual in the front passenger seat of the Charger was seen pointing a handgun out of the window. Investigators later collected fifteen discharged cartridge casings from the street. The investigation into Lee's death pointed to the shooting being potentially gang-related, as authorities noted that Lee was in the vicinity of alleged members of a rival gang at the time of the attack.
The investigation led by the Violent Offender Task Force resulted in the arrests of two suspects, 28-year-old Dante Kenneth Carter and 31-year-old Shannon Jackson. Carter was identified as the owner of the Dodge Charger seen fleeing the scene, and his cell phone data placed him in the area during the shooting. Jackson's DNA was found on a drinking straw inside the vehicle, and his cell phone records also indicated he was present at the time of the incident. One witness identified Jackson as the driver and Carter as the masked passenger. Both men were subsequently charged with second-degree murder. During the arrests, law enforcement found firearms in Jackson's residence and in the vehicle Carter was in. Carter also faces an additional felony charge for unlawful possession of a firearm due to previous convictions.
