Tonia Ariel Powell, a 30-year-old woman from Minneapolis, Minnesota, tragically lost her life in a shooting incident on July 23, 2023. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, just after midnight, in the 3100 block of 58th Street East in south Minneapolis.
According to police reports, officers responded to a call about a shooting at the location.
Upon arrival, they found Powell on the front steps of an apartment building, covered in blood and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was immediately transported to Hennepin Healthcare, where she was pronounced dead at 1:27 AM.
The shooting also left another woman in her 30s critically injured. This second victim was found inside the apartment building with life-threatening gunshot wounds and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
On July 27, 2023, prosecutors charged 20-year-old Calon Markus Hatchett in connection with the shooting. Hatchett faces charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and first-degree assault. According to the charging documents, the surviving victim identified Hatchett as the shooter, stating that he used to sell drugs at the building.
The incident has shocked the community and highlighted ongoing concerns about gun violence in Minneapolis. As of the initial reports, no clear motive for the shooting had been established, and the case remained under investigation by the Minneapolis Police Department.
