Kayla M. Demarais, 29, a White woman from rural Dassel Township, Minnesota, died on December 28, 2023, in a burst of gunfire inside the family home, ending a morning that began like any other winter weekday but quickly turned into a scene of panic, fear, and irreversible loss. Late that morning, a call came into emergency dispatch with words that made the gravity unmistakable: a man reporting a murder, saying he had shot Kayla while their children were in the house.
