In the late summer of 2015, the community of Excelsior, Minnesota, was shaken by a devastating tragedy that claimed the lives of an entire family. Among the victims was 15-year-old Madison Mariah Short, a sophomore at Minnetonka High School. On September 10, 2015, law enforcement discovered Madison, her 17-year-old brother Cole, 14-year-old sister Brooklyn, and their 48-year-old mother Karen Anne Short, all deceased in their Lake Minnetonka home.
