Anitra Rochelle Williams, a 26-year-old Black/African American female, was tragically killed on September 21, 2013, in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Her life was cut short in a harrowing murder-suicide that unfolded within the walls of her own home. The events of that day began in the early morning hours at the Eden Place apartment complex, where neighbors were startled by the sounds of a heated argument, followed by shouting and the terrifying sound of a gunshot.
A concerned resident placed
a call to 911 at approximately 7 a.m., reporting the gunshots that had shattered the morning's quiet. The initial police response quickly escalated when officers were unable to establish contact with anyone inside the second-floor apartment that Anitra shared with her husband and their two young children. The situation prompted a large-scale police operation, with the Eden Prairie SWAT team and officers from surrounding areas converging on the scene. As a safety measure, the entire 63-unit apartment building was evacuated, leaving residents displaced for several hours while the tense standoff continued.
After a prolonged period with no communication from inside, law enforcement made the decision to enter the apartment. Inside, they first discovered Anitra’s body. To ensure the safety of the officers, a Bloomington Bomb Squad robot was deployed to search the remainder of the residence, which led to the discovery of a man’s body. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner would later confirm that Anitra Rochelle Williams died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, officially ruling her death a homicide.
The man found deceased in the apartment was identified as Anitra's 29-year-old husband, Derrick Antoine Williams. The subsequent investigation by authorities concluded that Derrick Williams had shot and killed his wife before taking his own life. It was revealed that this was not the first instance of domestic trouble between the couple; police records showed a previous verbal domestic dispute had been reported in October 2009. The family had only been residents of the Eden Place apartment complex for a few months before the fatal incident. With the perpetrator deceased, authorities confirmed they were not seeking any other suspects in connection with Anitra's murder.
