In the spring of 2013, the life of a 24-year-old Caucasian woman, Dy Marie "Mandy" Matula, was tragically cut short, leaving a community in shock and her family searching for answers. On the evening of May 1, 2013, Matula was last seen leaving her family's home in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, with her ex-boyfriend, David Roe, also 24. She left without her purse or cell phone, stepping into Roe's vehicle for what would be the last time.
Concerns grew when Matula failed to show up for work the
following day, prompting her family to report her missing. The investigation quickly focused on Roe, who was identified as a person of interest. When police contacted him and requested he come in for questioning, Roe agreed. However, upon his arrival at the Eden Prairie police department parking lot on May 2, he took his own life by a self-inflicted gunshot wound before officers could speak with him.
The search for Matula became a desperate, months-long effort involving law enforcement, family, friends, and numerous volunteers. Investigators pieced together a timeline suggesting Roe had driven to Mississippi River County Park, an area he often fished, after leaving Eden Prairie. Evidence found in Roe's vehicle, including Matula's blood on his jacket, and an unfired bullet from his recently purchased handgun found in a church parking lot near her home, pointed to a grim conclusion.
On October 26, 2013, the search came to a heartbreaking end when a hiker discovered Matula's remains in a shallow grave within the park. An autopsy confirmed she had died from a single gunshot wound to the back of the head. Her body had been wrapped in a blanket. Among the remains, investigators found her University of Minnesota Duluth softball sweatshirt and her high school class ring, which helped in her identification. With Roe's suicide, authorities considered him the sole suspect in Matula's murder, and the investigation was officially closed.
