In Duluth, Minnesota, a tragic series of events unfolded on November 7, 2024, culminating in the death of 47-year-old Erin Potratz, a White female. Her life was cut short in a devastating act of violence that also claimed the lives of three others, including her own son. The discovery was made after a concerned coworker requested a welfare check when Erin, a dedicated employee for the city of Superior, Wisconsin's environmental services division, did not show up for work.
Police arrived
at Erin's residence to a grim scene, finding both her and her 15-year-old son, Jacob Nephew, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. The investigation quickly identified a suspect, leading authorities to a second home in Duluth. There, they found the bodies of 45-year-old Kathryn Ramsland and her 7-year-old son, Oliver Nephew, who had also been fatally shot.
The suspect in all four homicides was determined to be 46-year-old Anthony Nephew, Erin's former partner and the father of Jacob. Authorities reported that after killing Erin, Jacob, Kathryn, and Oliver, Anthony took his own life. Investigators noted that Anthony Nephew had a history of mental health issues. Due to the suspect's death, no arrests were made, and the case was classified as a murder-suicide.
Erin was remembered as a strong, loving single mother and an avid runner, actively involved with the local running group "She Runs This Town." Her son Jacob was a bright young man who played the violin and was a member of his school's cross-country skiing team. He had been excitedly looking forward to his 16th birthday and getting his driver's license. The community was left to mourn the sudden and senseless loss of a mother and son.
