In the heart of spring, on March 26, 2023, the life of 38-year-old Deaundreya D. Caraway, a Black / African American female, was tragically cut short in Topeka, Kansas. Police were called to a residence in the 1500 block of Southeast Quincy Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Ms. Caraway suffering from a fatal gunshot wound and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her death marked a grim milestone as the city's 12th homicide of the year.
In the days that followed the incident, the Topeka Police Department identified a person of interest in the case, 52-year-old Jeffrey D. Arnold, also known by the nickname "Cheese". An appeal was made to the public for assistance in locating him. The search for Arnold continued for several weeks until his arrest on May 12, 2023, in Johnson County, Kansas. However, his arrest was not directly for Caraway's death, but on unrelated charges that included fleeing or eluding a police officer and possession of marijuana.
The investigation into Deaundreya Caraway's death took a significant turn when the Shawnee County District Attorney, Mike Kagay, reviewed the case. After a thorough examination of the evidence and circumstances surrounding the shooting, the District Attorney's office made a crucial legal determination. It was ruled that the death of Deaundreya Caraway was a result of self-defense. Consequently, no charges were filed against Jeffrey Arnold in connection with the shooting, bringing the official investigation to a close.
