In the early evening of May 10, 2023, a dispute in a Wichita, Kansas neighborhood escalated to a fatal conclusion, claiming the life of 31-year-old Chance Martin, a White/Caucasian male. The conflict began when Martin accused Angel Pedro Lara of stealing his scooter. This confrontation led to Lara and his brother driving around the southeast Wichita neighborhood in search of Martin.
Later that evening, around 7 p.m.
in the Planeview neighborhood, their search culminated in a street altercation. Punches were exchanged between Martin and Lara's brother. In a moment of anger, Angel Pedro Lara pulled out a gun and shot Chance Martin once in the chest. Emergency services were called, and Martin was rushed to Wesley Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries approximately 40 minutes later.
Witnesses at the scene were able to identify the vehicle Lara fled in, which allowed Wichita police to utilize the Flock Safety camera system to track it to a house about four miles from the shooting. There, they found and arrested 24-year-old Angel Pedro Lara on suspicion of second-degree murder. Lara later pleaded guilty to the charge of second-degree reckless murder on August 17, 2023. In October of the same year, a district judge sentenced him to ten years and three months in prison. As part of his sentence, Lara was required to register as a violent offender for the rest of his life following his release. However, in an unexpected turn, Angel Pedro Lara died in prison in January 2025 after falling ill.
