In the late hours of a Monday night in Atlantic City, the life of 28-year-old Kendell Roseborough was tragically cut short. On July 28, 2025, police responded to a 911 call about a man lying on the sidewalk outside the Martinique Motel on Pacific Avenue. Upon arrival at approximately 10:30 p.m., they found Roseborough unresponsive with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of death was later determined to be a gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation into the death of Roseborough, a father of three young children and the son of Atlantic City Councilwoman LaToya Dunston, quickly became a collaborative effort between the Atlantic City Police Department and the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office. Surveillance footage from the motel played a crucial role in the investigation. The video reportedly showed an altercation involving multiple individuals before Roseborough retreated down a set of stairs. A suspect was then seen on the footage reaching over the railing and firing a shot, causing Roseborough to fall to the base of the stairs.
The investigation led to the identification of a suspect, 26-year-old Lamar Johnson, who also goes by the name Sheldon Ward. Further evidence connecting Johnson to the scene included his fingerprints, which were recovered from a room at the motel that he was seen entering and exiting before and after the shooting. On August 4, 2025, Johnson was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Task Force and charged with murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and conspiracy to commit murder. Following his arrest, a judge ordered him to be held in jail pending further legal proceedings.
