In the quiet town of Louisburg, Kansas, the life of 8-year-old Mason Kwan Stanford came to a tragic end on October 7, 2023. The young boy passed away at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, a day after being shot by his mother, Susan Stanford, in their home on October 6, 2023. Authorities have confirmed that Susan Stanford took her own life after shooting her son in what has been ruled a murder-suicide.
The Louisburg Police Department investigated the incident and assured the community that there were no other suspects involved and no ongoing threat to the public.
Mason, who was born on January 7, 2015, in Olathe, Kansas, was a third-grade student in Louisburg. He was known for his vibrant personality and his love for various activities. A green belt in martial arts, he was an enthusiastic student at Amerikick. He also enjoyed playing video games and going for jeep rides with his father and motorcycle rides with his grandfather. Remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, Mason had a playful nature and a knack for lovingly tormenting his family and friends. He even made light of a missing toe, a testament to his cheerful spirit.
The loss of Mason has deeply affected his family and the Louisburg community. He was preceded in death by his mother, Susan, and his grandmother, Sun Stanford. He is survived by his grandfather, Billy Stanford, his father, Travis Ross Jr., two bonus brothers, William and Travis III, as well as aunts and other grandparents. A joint memorial service for Mason and his mother was held on October 16, 2023, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas, where friends and family gathered to mourn the profound loss of a young life full of promise.
