In the late hours of November 6, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the nighttime quiet in a north Wichita neighborhood, tragically ending the life of 48-year-old Deanna Garcia, a White/Caucasian female. Garcia and her 49-year-old husband were in their home in the 2300 block of North Mascot, preparing for bed around 11 p.m., when the unexpected violence erupted.
Multiple gunshots were fired into their residence from the outside, striking both occupants.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene where they found Deanna Garcia with a critical gunshot wound to her upper body. She was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at 11:54 p.m. Her husband sustained a gunshot wound to his lower leg and was also transported to the hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening, and he was subsequently released after receiving treatment. Witnesses in the area reported hearing as many as 18 to 20 gunshots, underscoring the intensity of the assault on the couple's home.
The Wichita Police Department launched an extensive investigation into the shooting, which led to the arrest of an 18-year-old male on December 19, 2024. The suspect, who was an acquaintance of the victims, was taken into custody and booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, firing a gun into an occupied dwelling, and aggravated battery. While the suspect had a listed address that was the same as the victims', police do not believe he was living there at the time of the incident. Investigators have stated that the suspect was on foot outside the home when the shooting occurred. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, and the case is ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events that led to this tragic loss of life.
