In a tragic turn of events, a family dispute in Lake Charles, Louisiana, culminated in the shooting death of 36-year-old Arturo Acosta. The incident unfolded on the afternoon of Sunday, February 26, 2023, at a residence on Louisiana Highway 3059. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the scene around 3 p.m. following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Arturo Acosta with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Emergency medical services transported Acosta to a local hospital for treatment of his critical injuries. While he fought for his life, investigators began to piece together the events that had transpired. Their inquiry quickly led them to identify a family member, 45-year-old Ruben Acosta-Camacho, also of Lake Charles, as the individual responsible for the shooting. Acosta-Camacho had fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
Deputies later located Acosta-Camacho's vehicle at a business in Westlake. After a search of the area, they found and apprehended him. During questioning at the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office, Ruben Acosta-Camacho confirmed to detectives that he had shot the victim. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.
Several days later, on a Saturday, the case took a somber turn when Arturo Acosta succumbed to the injuries he had sustained in the shooting. Following his death, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office detectives upgraded the charges against Ruben Acosta-Camacho to second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon during a crime of violence. A judge set his bond at $690,000. The lead investigator on the case is Detective Lauren Manuel.
