In April 2023, the community of Broussard, Louisiana, was shaken by the tragic death of 51-year-old Katherine Jewell Mashburn Babineaux. The events unfolded at a residence on N. Girouard Road, where deputies from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office were called to investigate suspicious circumstances. Upon their arrival, they discovered the bodies of Katherine and her estranged husband, 53-year-old Eric Babineaux.
Investigators quickly determined the incident to be a murder-suicide.
It is believed that Eric Babineaux shot and killed Katherine before taking his own life. Further investigation revealed a grim narrative of domestic violence. According to reports, Eric Babineaux had rented a vehicle and waited for hours in the dark at Katherine's home before carrying out the fatal attack.
In the wake of this tragedy, Katherine's children, Drake and Malorie Vincent, took legal action against Eric Babineaux's estate, seeking justice for their mother's wrongful death. In February 2024, a district court judge awarded Katherine's estate a significant sum in damages. The attorney for the family highlighted that this civil action was the only available path to justice, given that the perpetrator had taken his own life, precluding any criminal prosecution.
