In the late hours of a Thursday evening in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the life of Devanta Tremon Matthews, a 28-year-old Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On May 18, 2023, just before 10:20 p.m., gunshots echoed through a parking garage near Louisiana State University, leaving Matthews fatally wounded. The Baton Rouge Police Department responded to the scene at the Altitude Baton Rouge apartment complex located on Highland Road, where they discovered Matthews deceased on the
second floor of the parking structure.
For months, the details surrounding the shooting remained scarce, with authorities initially stating that the motive and suspect were unknown. The investigation into the violent death of Devanta Matthews continued, as his family and community awaited answers. He was a resident of Baton Rouge, and his sudden death left a void in the lives of those who knew him.
The case saw a significant development nearly a year later. Following an extensive investigation by homicide detectives, a suspect was identified. In early June 2024, the Baton Rouge Police Department announced the arrest of 19-year-old Torian Porter in connection with the murder. Porter was taken into custody and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a charge of first-degree murder. While an arrest has been made, the investigation is considered ongoing.
