In the Central City area of New Orleans, a burst of gunfire on a summer evening tragically cut short the life of Geoffrey Antonio 'Geezy' McEwen. The 33-year-old Black male was at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Dryades Street on Sunday, June 25, 2023, when he was struck by multiple bullets. Though rushed to a local hospital in a private vehicle, McEwen succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The New Orleans Police Department's Homicide Section launched an
investigation that would soon span multiple states. Through their follow-up investigation, detectives identified 27-year-old Charlton Porter as the suspect in McEwen's death. The diligent work of the NOPD, in collaboration with local, state, and federal partners, led to the issuance of an arrest warrant for Porter on July 10, 2023, for homicide by shooting. The investigation also revealed that Porter was wanted in connection with another fatal shooting that had occurred just a month earlier in Dallas, Texas.
A multi-agency effort involving the New Orleans Police Department's Homicide Section, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Louisiana State Police, and the Dallas Police Department culminated in Porter's apprehension. On July 20, 2023, law enforcement located and arrested Porter without incident in the neighboring St. Bernard Parish. He is being held there pending extradition to Orleans Parish to face charges for McEwen's murder and subsequent transfer to Dallas to address the charges in that jurisdiction.
