George Young, a 65-year-old Black man from Marrero, Louisiana, was fatally shot on July 21, 2023, when gunfire tore through a home in the Lincolnshire subdivision. Deputies were called to the 6700 block of Mather Drive around 6:40 p.m. after reports that multiple people had been hit. Inside, they found four victims—three men and one woman—each suffering from at least one gunshot wound, turning what should have been an ordinary summer evening into a frantic rush of sirens, shouted
instructions, and desperate attempts to keep people alive.
Young was taken to a hospital, but the injuries were too severe, and he died soon after. The three other victims survived, and their injuries were reported as not life-threatening. In the first hours after the shooting, investigators said they had no suspect and no clear motive, leaving the neighborhood with only the echo of what happened and the unnerving silence of unanswered questions about who came to that house with a gun—and why.
As the case stretched from weeks into months, the investigation kept moving even when public details were scarce. By June 2024—nearly a year after the shooting—authorities announced that a suspect had been arrested, identified in reporting only by the surname Johnson, while also noting that investigators had not disclosed how the suspect was identified.
Later updates signaled that the investigation remained active and that investigators believed the violence on Mather Drive was not an unsolved mystery destined to fade. In August 2024, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office publicly sought a Marrero man named Gerald Lampkin in connection with the same July 2023 Mather Drive shooting, alleging charges that included first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, and obstruction of justice. The shifting public posture—first no suspect, then an arrest, then a public search naming Lampkin—suggested either multiple people were suspected of involvement or that the case developed in stages as detectives pieced together what happened, witness by witness and lead by lead.
