In the early evening of January 3, 2024, a deadly encounter unfolded at the Boulevard Apartment Homes in Gretna, Louisiana, resulting in the death of 39-year-old Jhonas Armando Garcia Carbajal of Terrytown. What began as a rekindling of communication after several months of silence between Garcia Carbajal and Patricia Lopez-Melgar, a woman with whom he had an intermittent affair, ended in his violent demise.
Lopez-Melgar, the mother of Carlos Martinez Ramirez's children, allegedly used Instagram to lure Garcia Carbajal to her apartment in the 900 block of Gretna Boulevard.
Throughout the day, a series of messages were exchanged between Lopez-Melgar and Garcia Carbajal, culminating in an invitation for him to visit her that evening. Unbeknownst to Garcia Carbajal, the invitation was a setup. Upon his arrival, he was met by Martinez Ramirez, who was lying in wait. An altercation ensued, and Martinez Ramirez is accused of beating and then fatally shooting Garcia Carbajal. The attack was brutal, leaving the victim with multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the death of Jhonas Garcia Carbajal quickly focused on the two individuals involved in the arranged meeting. While Patricia Lopez-Melgar's role was to draw the victim to the location, authorities identified her boyfriend, Carlos Martinez Ramirez, as the man who carried out the fatal assault. The motive behind the killing appears to be rooted in the romantic entanglement between Garcia Carbajal, Lopez-Melgar, and Martinez Ramirez.
In the months following the homicide, the legal process began to move forward. On May 30, 2024, a Jefferson Parish grand jury handed down an indictment against Carlos Martinez Ramirez, charging him with second-degree murder and obstruction of justice in connection with the death of Jhonas Garcia Carbajal. As of early June 2024, law enforcement was still actively searching for Martinez Ramirez, who remained at large. Authorities have sought the public's help in locating him, offering a reward for any information that leads to his apprehension and indictment.
