In the late hours of a summer night in Baton Rouge, a violent encounter on Interstate 110 claimed the life of 22-year-old Antoine Bowie. Just around midnight on August 17, 2024, Bowie was driving northbound near the Government Street exit when another vehicle pulled alongside his, and gunfire erupted. Struck by the hail of bullets, Bowie was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in his vehicle was also wounded, shot in the face, but was transported to a local hospital and was expected to survive.
The investigation into the shooting quickly revealed that this was not a random act of violence. According to court documents, surveillance footage captured the suspect's vehicle with Bowie's car before, during, and after the fatal incident, indicating that he was targeted. The investigation led Baton Rouge Police to 24-year-old Tyquincy James. He was arrested in connection with the homicide and was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Further details emerged, suggesting James did not act alone. A 16-year-old was reportedly with James in his red Kia at the time of the shooting. During the investigation, a search of the residence where James was apprehended uncovered a Glock 17 handgun with an extended magazine and a machine gun conversion kit. Along with the murder charges, James also faces counts of illegal use of a weapon, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, and possession of a machine gun.
