In the small city of Minden, Louisiana, the community was shaken by the violent deaths of 82-year-old Joe Cornelius Sr. and his 31-year-old daughter, Keisha Miles. On the morning of Sunday, September 1, 2024, police responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired and discovered their bodies inside a residence on Austin Street. Both victims had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The magazines of the two handguns used in the incident had been completely emptied.
Another child, a six-year-old, was also present in the house at the time of the shooting but was physically unharmed.
Joe Cornelius Sr. was a well-known figure in Minden, having served as a longtime city councilman and briefly as interim mayor in 2013. He was also a retired deputy marshal and was recognized for his work with local youth through an organization he founded called Concerned Citizens of Minden.
The investigation into the double homicide took a shocking turn when a juvenile relative of Cornelius confessed to the killings. The suspect, identified as an 11-year-old boy and the son of Keisha Miles, was taken into custody. The boy's grandmother, who is his legal guardian, was present when he confessed to law enforcement. Initially, he provided a different account of the events before admitting to the shooting. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and his bond was set at $500,000.
While investigators were initially trying to understand the motive, neighbors reported hearing an argument between Cornelius and the boy before the gunshots. The dispute was allegedly over credit card charges for video games. However, the case grew more complex with the emergence of disturbing allegations against Joe Cornelius Sr. Videos recovered from Keisha Miles's iCloud account after her death appeared to show her confronting her father about long-term sexual abuse. In the recordings, Cornelius seems to acknowledge the abuse. Miles's older son stated that he and his younger brother were aware of the alleged abuse their mother had endured since childhood. There were also claims that Cornelius had been physically abusive towards the 11-year-old suspect. The Minden Police Chief acknowledged that they had heard 'rumors' about Cornelius but had not found 'substantive evidence' to support the claims of sexual abuse.
