Nolan Greathouse, a 39-year-old Black man from New Orleans, was described by loved ones as "an amazing young man" and "the epitome of a good man" who deeply loved his family. He was a married father of six. His life was taken in a shooting on September 21, 2024.
That night, Greathouse was with a group of people at a bar in the city's 7th Ward. According to an assistant district attorney, they were "just a group of people outside trying to enjoy the city" when an altercation broke out.
The conflict escalated, leading to a tragedy just minutes later.
Following the initial dispute, a man named Larry Pounds, armed with a rifle, chased Greathouse down the 1600 block of Touro Street. Surveillance footage showed that after Greathouse fell to the ground, Pounds continued to fire his weapon. Police responded to a call around 1 a.m. and found Greathouse suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The New Orleans Police Department launched an investigation, led by Detective Matthew Riffle. He secured crucial surveillance footage of both the earlier altercation and the fatal shooting. By comparing the recordings with an identification photograph and other information, investigators were able to connect Pounds to the killing.
Larry Pounds was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Prosecutors presented a case to the jury that combined the police detective's work with cell phone evidence. On September 24, 2026, an Orleans Parish jury found Pounds guilty of second-degree murder for killing Nolan Greathouse. As of October 2026, sentencing was scheduled for November 6, 2026, before Judge Nandi Campbell in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court.
