In the early morning hours of January 6, 2023, the life of 69-year-old Mitchell Eddings was tragically cut short in his own driveway. A Black male known as the 'heartbeat' of his family, Eddings was returning to his home in the Parkland neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, after a shift working security at Caesars Southern Indiana Casino. It was around 1 a.m.
in the 1000 block of South 26th Street when the sound of rapid gunfire broke the quiet of the night, a neighbor later recalled.
Louisville Metro Police officers responded to reports of a shooting and found Eddings with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services arrived at the scene, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The incident marked the seventh homicide in Louisville just six days into the new year, a grim statistic that weighed heavily on the community. Eddings was remembered by his grieving family as a beloved father, brother, uncle, and grandfather—a handyman, grill-master, and mechanic who was the glue that held them together. They were left in shock, stating he was a man who would help anyone and had no known enemies, making his violent death all the more incomprehensible.
The Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit immediately began an investigation into the shooting. Despite the efforts of law enforcement and the family's heartfelt pleas for answers, no suspects have been publicly identified or arrested in connection with the murder.
