In the quiet community of Jackson, Kentucky, the life of 39-year-old Tammy Michelle Thorpe was tragically cut short on Saturday, January 14, 2023. What initially may have been portrayed as a suicide quickly unraveled into a homicide investigation, leading to the arrest of her husband.
Authorities were called to the couple's home on a chilling Saturday morning with a report that Tammy Thorpe had taken her own life.
However, upon their arrival, investigators immediately suspected that the scene was not consistent with a suicide. The evidence at the home suggested a more sinister turn of events had transpired.
Suspicion soon fell upon her 62-year-old husband, Berry Johnson. The couple had only been married the previous December. An investigation by the Breathitt County Sheriff's Office led to Johnson's arrest in connection with his wife's death. He was subsequently charged with murder, along with tampering with physical evidence and first-degree wanton endangerment.
Further investigation revealed that Tammy Thorpe had been shot while she was sleeping. It is believed that a small child was present in the room at the time of the incident. Johnson was accused of staging the scene to make it appear as though his wife had died by suicide. He was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail on a $1 million cash bond.
